This class will explore the relationship between music and visual media from the 20th and 21st centuries. Engaging with music films, visual albums, and music videos, students will learn to examine the associations between sound, film, and moving imagery. Students will watch, discuss, and write about media such as Purple Rain, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Temptations, Dreamgirls, Lemonade (Beyoncé), Dirty Computer (Janelle Monae), and Moonwalker (Michael Jackson). In the process, you will learn to think critically and deeply about film and other media and about the different components that go into creating art.
To supplement course materials and discussion, we will take trips to the Museum of Popular Culture, The Museum of History and Industry, and the Seattle Art Museum, as well as UW's own Henry Art Gallery and Ethnic Cultural Center.
