ARTSCI 160 Q

Roommates and Partners

In this College Edge seminar, we’re diving into contemporary world literature to explore the different kinds of partnerships that form when people live and learn together. Think about college roommates, romantic relationships, multigenerational families, or even friendships forged while traveling abroad. We’ll read stories from around the globe—North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa—by authors who tackle important themes like ethnicity, religion, gender, social class, and community values.

As we read, you’ll have the chance to creatively interpret how characters cross personal boundaries, shape their identities, and create unforgettable memories. This course isn’t just about reading; you’ll also develop your skills in writing, discussion, and debate—tools that will serve you well in college and beyond. Plus, you’ll connect what we study to your own interests and experiences.

For your final project, you’ll get to think outside the box! Whether it’s creative writing, original art, a video, an interactive website, or a photographic portfolio, you’ll reimagine characters and relationships from our readings. You’ll then present your project in a fun collaborative showcase at our last class. Join us for an engaging journey into literature and creativity.
