The Science and Stress of Wellbeing

students working together in the Suzzallo reading room.

How have concepts of human well-being changed across time and space? How can you apply this knowledge to optimally manage stress and enhance well-being in your own life? This course combines concepts from behavioral endocrinology, psychology, and anthropology to examine the biology of stress and science of happiness. Throughout the course, we will critically examine the evidence for and mechanisms underlying wellness recommendations from scientific research and popular culture. We will also experiment with techniques purported to promote well-being, with emphasis on establishing feasible student-work-life balance as you begin your UW journey.
