Helping your Husky Arrive Early and Start Strong
Welcome to College Edge! We’re so glad your student is starting their UW journey with us.
Starting college is a big transition—not just for students, but for families too. College Edge is designed to support that transition in a thoughtful, structured, and welcoming way. Over four weeks, students begin building confidence, community, and a sense of belonging at the University of Washington.
As a parent or family member, you play an important role in this moment. Our goal is to make sure you feel informed, supported, and connected as your student takes this next step.

What Your Student Will Experience
College Edge gives students a strong start before autumn quarter begins. During the program, students will:
- Take a small, seminar-style college course (about 20–25 students)
- Get to know faculty and experience college-level academics
- Build friendships with other incoming students
- Learn how to navigate campus and access key resources
- Begin developing independence in a supportive environment
Many students describe College Edge as the moment things “click”—when UW starts to feel like home.
What This Transition Looks Like
The first few weeks of college can feel exciting, overwhelming, and everything in between. Students are adjusting to:
- Living away from home (for many, for the first time)
- Managing their own schedules and responsibilities
- Meeting new people and forming friendships
- Engaging in a new level of academic expectation
College Edge is intentionally designed to ease this transition. Students are supported by faculty, staff, and campus partners throughout the program.
Traveling to Seattle & UW
We’re excited to welcome you to Seattle! Here are a few tips to help you plan your visit and arrival for College Edge.
When to Arrive
We recommend that students and families plan to arrive by Friday, August 21, 2026, which is College Edge move-in day. Arriving on the 21st gives students time to get settled, explore campus, and adjust before the program begins.
The College Edge program officially begins on Monday, August 24, 2026.
Getting to Seattle
Most families will fly into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), located about 20 miles south of the University of Washington campus.
Getting to Campus
- Link Light Rail – direct route from the airport to UW (about 45 minutes). The U District Station is the closest stop to the main campus.
- Rideshare or Taxi – about 25–30 minutes, depending on traffic
- Shuttle Services – shared or private options to campus or nearby hotels
Driving & Parking
- Take I-5 to the NE 45th Street exit toward campus
- Allow extra time for traffic, especially during peak hours
- Visitor parking is available in campus garages
Where to Stay
There are lots of great places to stay near campus, and in the surrounding neighborhoods of Seattle. Here's one option you might consider just north of campus:
Courtyard by Marriott Seattle Northgate, 10733 Meridian Avenue North Seattle, Washington, USA, 98133
Other Recommended Areas
- University District (U District) – closest to campus
- Downtown Seattle – more hotel options, 10–15 minutes away
- South Lake Union / Capitol Hill – vibrant neighborhoods with easy transit access
Booking Tips
- Book early—August fills quickly in Seattle! The weather is usually great.
- Check cancellation policies
- Look for parking if needed
- Plan to stay starting at least August 21 (move-in day) through at least August 24 (program start)
How long should I stay?
Some families stay through move-in and head home before classes begin, while others take time to explore Seattle together—both are great options.
How You Can Support Your Student
Every student’s transition looks a little different, but here are a few ways families can help:
- Encourage independence while staying connected
- Ask open-ended questions about their experience
- Remind them that it’s okay to take time to adjust
- Support them in reaching out for help when needed
We also encourage students to take advantage of campus resources early—Academic Advising, UW Counseling Services, their HFS Residential Adviser, and community spaces are all part of their experience.
